Before I Go To Sleep (Book Review)

Updated: Jun 24, 2020

Before I Go To Sleep is the debut novel of British author, S.J. Watson. First published in 2011, it quickly became a New York Times and Sunday Times bestseller. In the story we follow the protagonist Christine Lucas, who wakes up every single day with no knowledge of who or where she is. This is due to an accident that has led to a form of amnesia which has left her able to form memories for only 24 hours. We are with Christine as she attempts to relearn everything from scratch: who her husband is, where they live and attempting to understand what her life was like before.

The novel is essentially a journal that has been advised to Christine by her doctor, Dr. Nash. It allows her to rediscover things she has forgotten from her past, that allows her to build an image of her life in the present. But, we soon learn that this journal has been kept secret from her husband Ben, which soon begs the question, what does she have to hide?

A thriller at its finest, it focuses on the trivial and most mundane aspects of life and through this S.J. Watson makes it so much scarier and real for the reader. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time I was reading this, even my hands started shaking from anticipation! The twist towards the end is probably one of the best twists I've ever read!

If you're looking for a novel that will constantly keeps you on your toes and definitely raises your blood pressure then this is the book for you!
